"Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynaecological disease with less than 50% of patients surviving more than five years after their diagnosis. With no early detection test and vague symptoms, it is often diagnosed late, making it difficult to treat. However, if detected early, particularly before symptoms appear, studies suggest the survival rate could increase above 90%."

That’s the goal for Professor Carlos Salomon Gallo and his team at the University of Queensland. Since 2017, the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation has been supporting Professor Gallo’s research into early detection. Over the years, the team has made several key discoveries leading to the development of a highly specialised blood test known as OCRF-7. The test detects a constellation of signals in the blood that indicate very early signs of ovarian cancer. Recently, Professor Gallo’s research attracted extra funding from the Australian Government to progress to further testing and trials.

This is one of 16 research projects currently supported by the OCRF, Australia’s leading independent funder of ovarian cancer research. Together, we will overcome ovarian cancer.
